While walking around my yard the other day, I found a green bean bush I hadn't yet pulled up. There were still beans on it in various stages of life. I picked a couple and ate them on the spot but then I picked one that had dried and turned white. I split it open and found to my wonderment - dried beans! Now, it makes sense that if you leave the beans on the bush long enough they will dry - but I've never heard of anyone cooking the dried beans - or do dried green beans go by a different name? I don't know why this discovery surprised me, I'm an analytical thinker so I should not have been surprised by dried green beans. Things need to make sense to me and this makes sense! I'd be interested to hear what you have to say about them - have you ever used dried green beans or do you manage to eat all your fresh beans? Maybe they turn into magic beans and grow like Jack's beanstalk!
I wish I knew the answer. I always thought gardeners would harvest the beans and allow them to dry.
ReplyDeleteOh my yes. I eat all the fresh green beans I want, and then I let the rest fully ripen and dry on the bush, then shell and save the beans for seed for next year. I know if I had a ton of plants, and lots of dried beans, I'd be using the beans for soups, etc. too. One year I bought a bag of 15-bean soup mix and planted every kind in the bag. What fun to see how many different kinds of plants you get that way. So enjoy those beans every way you can. :-D
ReplyDeleteI will have to try this, Kris. My Dad might enjoy doing this - hmm.. perhaps a Christmas or birthday gift idea. He likes planting different things to see what comes up.
DeleteThe one thing I did remember (it was a long time ago) was that some of the beans plants were bush types, and some were really wild climbers, so expect crazy ones. Have fun.
