Maple syrup and sapsicles

The sap is running! Do you see the maple sapsicle on my tree? I've enjoyed watching my squirrels pick off the sapsicles and munch on them. They've been scampering all over the tree licking up the sap. When the sapsicles melt, they create quite a sticky mess underneath.  I have made syrup from this tree when my kids were younger and I was home all day to watch it cook outside. Nothing can beat homemade maple syrup. My son & daughter-in-law went to a maple festival this past weekend and brought back a jar of maple cream for me. HMMMM!! Yummy on toast.

  1. I've never heard of this before, what a neat thing. Is the tree cracked that the sap is running out?

  2. Marguerite - the maple trees get small cracks in the branches or branches may get damaged during the winter. The squirrels and birds are all over the trees drinking up the sap that drips out. I've even seen the squirrels this year peel off bits of bark to get to the sap underneath.

  3. Bonnie, I've never seen this either, what an amazing sight. Homemade maple syrup bears no resemblance to the store bought stuff, does it? There is nothing like the real thing.

  4. Karen, homemade maple syrup is so different from store bought. And I might add - the sap sickles are fun to eat too - nature's popsicles!

  7. Hi Bonnie,
When they came to cut the tree in the front, the day after I happened to go out and look up at the tree and that is what it looked like. From every place they cut, the sap was pouring out. At first I thought it was ice because of the snow and cold till I realized what it was,,,, to me it was soooo sad because the tree was bleeding :(
On a Happier note hope Spring finds you really soon,,,
You must have some very happy Squirrels :)
    Have a Great Day ~
